At a time of bereavement, selecting a coffin for the funeral can be a difficult and sometimes daunting task.
There are literally hundreds of variations of coffins available today, from simple cardboard coffins to American style caskets and the choice can be bewlidering.
After a great deal of research, we have selected a handful of suppliers whom we trust and who provide coffins made from truly eco-friendly materials.
No toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde are usd in their manufacture. Only water based natural glues and recylcled materials are used in the manufacturing process.
Alternatively you can source your own and there are companies listed on our Links page that will sell low cost environmentally friendly coffins direct to the public (don’t forget to allow for VAT and delivery when making your selection).
Below is a simple choice of eco-coffins, all made to strong environmental standards: from traditional pine to picture-laminated Ecologique board; and natural wool-covered cardboard to hand-woven willow.

Musgrove Willow Coffins
These beautiful Somerset willow coffins are all hand made to order. If you would like to visit their visitor centre you can watch and if you wish, even participate in weaving your loved ones coffin yourself.
Although this may sound unusual at first, many families have followed this path and without exception have described this as a tremendously fulfilling and healing process.

Woodland Coffin
Manufactured using Ecologique Nil Formaldehyde added board, suitable for all types of burial and cremation. This simple yet characterful coffin comes fitted with cotton lining, pillow and frill. Fitted with six jute or wood handles.

A simple yet dignified and elegant coffin in a traditional style manufactured with a real Oak, Sapele or Mahogany veneer. Suitable for burial or cremation. Finished in either a gloss or satin water based varnish.

Solid Pine
Classic style made from solid pine wood. The pine wood is selected from European sustainable forests. The coffin is fitted with matching, biodegradable wood handles and finished with natural, water-based polish.

Reflections
Classic style, laminated picture on formaldehyde free Ecologique board made with 80% waste wood and 20% sustainable wood, sourced in Ireland. The imagery is printed onto paper, which is then laminated onto the coffin using a water-based glue. The coffin comes with a natural biodegradable cotton lining and is supplied without handles. You can choose from a selection of designs. Alternatively you may wish to create your own designs (please allow £190 for personalised design service).

The Woollen
Made from pure new British Wool. The Natural Legacy by Hainsworth Woollen Coffin is handmade in Yorkshire using pure new British wool, supported on a strong recycled cardboard frame. Wool is a fibre with a true ‘green’ lineage that is both sustainable and biodegradable. The interior is generously lined with organic cotton and attractively edged with jute and the quality standard of strength and functionality has been independently accredited.

Bamboo
A traditionally shaped bamboo coffin which is both tasteful and naturally beautiful, it can be interwoven with flowers and foliage to enhance its elegant style. Manufactured using natural sustainable material ethically sourced with a social legacy. Made on a wooden frame and base the coffin is strong and practical, our Bamboo coffin is supplied finished with bio degradable cotton lining and quality 9” frill. This coupled with the Tree Tribute and Carbon Rebalancing donation to Groundworks UK ensures this coffin is justifiably ‘green.’
